My First Food Post … An Easy Healthy Breakfast
I’d originally toyed with the idea of a food blog … much like Katie’s or Kathleen’s. Then I decided sharing recipes and other good-eats tidbits could be a piece of what I chat about … what with all the dating and dog dishing I wanted to do.
As it turns out, I’m writing about food much less than I’d anticipated. So far, not at all.
I suspect it’s because I started a new eating plan around the same time this blog was born. Five smaller, protein-based meals/snacks a day, two with a protein shake or bar. I’m not a big fan of cooking for one, and on this plan I’ve been cooking even less. It’s also nothing really inspired … although an omelet with sautéed asparagus, shallots, mushrooms and parmesan is gorgeous and truly delightful.
In my quest to spice up the protein shake/bar regime, I’ve been doing some searching and light experimentation. Vanilla shake with peaches in the freezer … nothing short of gag worthy. I also don’t recommend pancakes from the mix and water (it’s the last entry … after the protein mix cake and ice cream concoctions… and lots of fun pics of bodybuilders noshing on these “tasty” treats). Honestly, this didn’t taste all that bad (or I’m just desperate at this point), but the consistency wasn’t pancake-like enough to satisfy me … or make it worth the effort. Then again, what the heck was I really expecting from professional body builder recipes?
My one fantastic shake find was the result of over hydration and my desire to not spend the morning running to … well, you know … 50 times. See, I was drinking my morning iced coffee and a protein shake. Combining the two … yummm-eee!
I make a pot of coffee and stick it in the fridge. Two measuring cups of coffee, two scoops chocolate protein powder, and because I like my coffee a little like candy … 2 Tbs. half and half (40 calories) and a generous sprinkle of Splenda … all whirled in the blender. It’s a fast, delicious and surprisingly filling breakfast.
Unfortunately, I love a relaxed, somewhat special weekend breakfast and the shake doesn’t cut it. So I’m off to have a bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar and walnuts. Mmmmmm.
