Shar on Vegetarianism

My lovely mother Shar …

… and I are doing the diet I’ve mentioned together. This week we’re supposed to jump start it by sticking to a vegetarian menu as directed by our doctor. I called Shar earlier to whine a little because the diet is also lots of fruits and salads plus protein shakes, and I’m so darn cold today I just wanted something nice and warm for lunch. Here’s the conversation:

Shar: I know what you mean. We’re having tuna for lunch.
Me: Um … we can’t have that.
Shar: Why not? She said no meat. I’m not having meat.
Me: Yeah … this isn’t the Catholic version of vegetarianism. Fish is meat.

Sheesh!

You’re not being very nice to your mother. Yes, I admit I’ve had a couple of snags this week, but let’s see who loses the most weight when Friday gets here. Any bets?????

    Your LOVING Mom,
    Shar

Ummm, hate to say it, but I would have considered tuna non-meat also. NOT vegetarian, but not meat.

You two girls knock it off! You are both so cute!

This is so cool–I’ve never seen anything like it. How do you get the cartoon character made?

Mike wants you both to be successful really bad but he knows how hard it is. In my world, as in Shar’s, tuna is a vegetable cause it’s good for you. You could dye it green to make you feel better.

It’s not a candy mint, it’s not a breath mint–ladies, TUNA is a meat even though it comes from a fish! As for fruit I am wild about a new product from Del Monte, delicious fruit in glass quart jars. The product is a little on the pricy side, but the way I look at it, I’m better off buying the quart of fruit than the pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Schuncks and Dierbergs sell for $4.99, but Shop n Save has it for $3.99. I caught it on sale at Dierbergs for $2.74 during a recent half off sale. Of course Tropical Medley is my favorite, but they also have sugar free peaches, sweetened with Splenda. Joe and I enjoy those peaches with cottage cheese. Big deal for me, no more daily beers! I finally broke the habit in October. Coupled with walking July-Oct, I trimmed off 10 lbs. Unfortunatley, in the mean time, Joe discovered French Silk Blizzards at Dairy Queen.

Usually when you eat fish, you eat the muscle which in my book is meat. I even tried pointing this out in my RCIA classes to no avail ;) Good luck on your diet and let me know how it goes. I’ve tried the vegetarian thing and only last 24 hours before I give into my cravings for beef/chicken. If you can find a way to beat those cravings let me know.

Ok – not to be mean – but veganism has never been my cup of tea…but I do have some “part vegatarian” friends. The bottom line is yeah tuna’s meat. But unless you are litterally eating nothing but leafy greens it’s darn hard to be a true vegan these days.
My thought – quit the diet drinks, switch to flavored water. You’ll be AMAZED at how less hungary you feel by eliminating the diet drinks b/c they have al altered effect of hunger inducing.

Green tea is awesome – it’s good for you & hardly any caffeine. The peach is my fave…

Snack on rasins and or fruit of any kind. Natural sugar for the sweets we crave & filling too.

Stick with fish & chicken & pork for just a few weeks & you’ll notice the pounds coming off. :o )

I’ve lost about 10 pounds since the summer by changing habits slowly & now I have been kicking it up a bit & clothes are getting looser…:o)

I’m not making any bets, but…..as a carnivor, I have always looked at tuna as MEAT!!! If you find yourself getting hungry, try eating more beans. They are a good source of protein and will keep your hunger at bay…aside from the potential side effects of beans (think about the people you sit near), they really are delicious.

Three cheers for Amber and Sharon. If you happen to find a magic weight loss bullet, let me know! I’m doing vegetarian myself as I type this: popcorn and Coca-Cola. :-)

HA! Another “Catholic Mystery” I’ve never understood. Hope you survive the vegetarianism.

I just think it is neat that you are doing this together!! Good luck on your diet and can’t wait to see you in April! I think as we get older we are true “entertainment” for our kids. I love the “Oh Mom” we get when we have our “blonde moments”!!!!

I once had to take Thanksgiving to a friend living in Memphis, because she couldn’t makeit home for the holiday. So I recruited a mutual friend to help me take the turkay an ALL the trimmings to my sweet friend. During the 5 hour trip, I explained to our friend all of the fabulous things I had in store for appetizers, dinner and dessert,( turkey with sausauge stuffing, green beans with bacon, etc…) I did not know yet that he was a recent vegetarian convert and when he said he “did not eat anything with a face, ” my quick comeback was, “Well your in luck, I cut the faces off already.” We are still friends, but probably only because I make a very mean chocolate cream pie!
